Jakarta, Indonesia — The Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) condemns the brutal shooting of more than ten thousand protesters by the Police Resort (Police) of Palu, Central Sulawesi in Lorelindu Sigi. The protesters were on their way to join the global action on the Day of the Landless on March 29, 2016. The violent police action injured 14 couple with the arrest of 64 protesters.
The protest action against massive land grabbing and intensifying landlessness was composed of peasant masses together with the Front Perjuangan Rakyat/the People’s Struggle Front (FPR) of Central Sulawesi. The action was simultaneous with the national action of Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria/ The Alliance of Agrarian Reform Movement (AGRA) and the FPR. Protest actions on the Day of the Landless were also carried-out in various countries in coordination with the APC and the International League of People’s Struggle’s Agrarian Reform Commission. As stated, these actions highlight the worsening big corporate land grabbing in collusion with repressive governments which effect exploitative relations in production, landlessness, poverty and hunger.
However, protest action in Central Sulawesi was met with violence. This is a violation of the human and people’s rights which unmasks the repressive character of the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla government readily deploying security forces to attack the mass action. This is a dispossession of the rights of the people voicing out their demands and aspirations to a life of dignity and genuine development.
“The APC condemns the anti-people and anti-democratic violent action on the protesters of Central Sulawesi. Those responsible for this should be held accountable and justice should be done to the people. The APC extends its warm salute to the Lorelindu community for their action and resolve to struggle for land and justice. We also extend our warmest solidarity with all the organizations and toiling masses on the Global Day of Action of the Landless yesterday, March 29,” said Rafael V. Mariano, chairperson of the APC.
The APC calls on those concerned to:
1. Immediately release the 64 people who were arrested and are in detention.
2. Immediately and thoroughly investigate the brutal action and hold those responsible accountable so that justice maybe served.
3. For the Jokowi-JK government to put a stop to acts of human rights violations such as intimidation, terrorism and criminalization of the masses in agrarian conflicts, and the killings of those who fight for their land and life.
4. For the government to repeal all laws and resolutions which effect landgrabbing such as on oil palm plantations, national parks and other cases.
We also enjoin all APC member organizations to send messages of solidarity to the FPR and Agra and messages of condemnation and call for justice addressed to the Indonesian government. We call on the peasantry and the peoples in various countries to strengthen our unity and advance the struggle against the plunder of land and resources by monopoly capitalists and strive for genuine agrarian reform.
March 29 is a historic event in the people’s struggle for land and resources in Asia when the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) was founded on the said date 13 years ago to challenge imperialist and feudal oppression and exploitation. Yesterday, coordinated actions were organized by 23 organizations from APC and its network in 8 countries such as in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Palestine on March 29.
