KMP NEWS RELEASE #1 / September 17, 2018
Let the wheels of justice turn, let Palparan rot in jail
Farmers under Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) welcomed the decision of Malolos RTC Judge Alexander Tamayo declaring former General Jovito Palparan guilty of kidnapping and serious illegal detention related to the disappearance of University of the Philippines (UP) students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeno in 2006.
“This verdict is long overdue. Palparan should rot in jail and be punished for the heinous crimes he committed at the height of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s counterinsurgency program Oplan Bantay Laya,” says Antonio Flores, secretary general of KMP.
Palparan is also the mastermind in the abduction and killing of Southern Luzon activist Eden Marcellana and KMP leader Eddie Gumanoy in Oriental Mindoro on April 2002. The notorious general also abducted killed many peasant leaders in Central Luzon and Eastern Visayas during his reign as Arroyo’s favorite ‘butcher general’ from 2001 to 2007. Many activists who went missing under Oplan Bantay Laya remain disappeared up to this day.”
“We have waited for years for this day to come. Palparan had his day court and was convicted. Now he must serve time in jail and pay for his crimes,” the KMP leader said.
“Impunity is not forever. That is a lesson to be learned by President Duterte who have also authorized the killing of thousands under his drug war, Martial Law in Mindanao and Oplan Kapayapaan,” Flores concluded.
