Today, less than a week before the 43rd anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, we hold a protest to condemn the intensifying political repression under the regime of Pres. Noynoy Aquino. We are calling on all workers and Filipinos to condemn the Aquino regime’s political repression and to continue uniting and fighting for their basic rights against this regime’s anti-worker and anti-people policies.

We condemn the killing of Lumads and other activists in Mindanao. No amount of lies from the military can hide the fact that it is responsible for the recent deaths of Lumads. The Aquino regime is stepping up its human-rights violations in Mindanao in the interest of big foreign mining companies in the area. We are calling for the immediate pullout of military troops deployed in Mindanao and the disbandment of its paramilitary units in the island.

We are calling for the immediate release of all detained labor rights defenders. The Aquino regime has illegally imprisoned 10 labor rights defenders who should be immediately set free: Benito Tiamzon, Wilma Austria-Tiamzon, Adelberto Silva, Sharon Cabusao, Renante Gamara, Randy Vegas, Raul Camposano, Rene Boy Abiva, Virgilio Corpuz, and Ernesto Lorenzo. When the extremely repressive Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo regime was about to end, we were calling for the release of one labor rights defender; now we are calling for the release of 10.

We are calling for the junking of all trumped-up charges against labor rights defenders and other political detainees, especially the “April 2012 Ifugao” trumped-up case. This case is responsible for the imprisonment of Vegas, Camposano, Abiva and Corpuz and for the issuance of arrest warrants against Kilusang Mayo Uno-Metro Manila leaders Roy Velez and Amelita Gamara. This case is obviously fabricated as the said accused were working for progressive organizations COURAGE, KMU, PISTON and ACT. The lone witness in the case claims that he was able to identify those who were accused because they shouted their names before firing their guns in an ambush staged by the New People’s Army in Ifugao in April 2012.
