We stand with the Peoples’ Global Conference against the IMF-WB

PGCStatement ILPS-Philippines / 10 October 2018

The Philippines Chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS-Phils) stands firm with the Peoples’ Global Conference (PGC) against the IMF-WB despite vicious attempts by the Indonesian state authorities to harass, threaten and suppress democratic dissent.

The rapacity of the IMF-WB to bleed economies and the working people is being secured by the devious police state to crackdown on protest.

The Indonesian government under Pres. Joko Widodo has mobilized more than 20,000 police troops in a desperate attempt to suppress the Peoples’ Global Conference (PGC) and other democratic activities to air legitimate concerns before the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bali, Indonesia.

Widodo has turned Bali into a police garrison, securing a paradise for the world’s financial managers.  The crying need of earthquake and tsunami victims in Sulawesi is swept under the welcome carpet laid by Widodo for the corporate elite and imperialist magnates.

Indonesian authorities blatantly barred the PGC from gathering at the Radio Republik Indonesia. Internationally recognized people’s organizations and social movements are falsely labelled as “terrorists”.

Among the Indonesian organizations wrongly accused of links with terrorism are the Front Mahasiswa Nasional (FMN), Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Bali (LBH Bali, or Bali Legal Aid Institute), an institution that provides legal assistance to the poor and marginalized; Kelompok Belajar Mahasiswa Progresif (KBMP, or Progressive Student Study Group), a national organisation of Indonesian students; and the Aliansi Mahasiswa Papua (AMP, or Papuan Student Alliance).

The ILPS is among the organizers of the PGC together with the Gerakan Rakyat Melawan IMF-WB, the PGC’s National Organizing Committee in Indonesia.

Despite serious threats against its leaders and organizers, the PGC will proceed from October 11 to 14, holding parallel sessions, open space fora and mass mobilizations to gather world-wide members of people’s movements and civil society organizations.

We call on all mass and democratic organizations to support the PGC and assert our rights against the IMF-WB and its imperialist plunder of peoples and nations.

We hold the Widodo regime accountable for its abominable attack on people’s organizations and actions.
