“The country ought to be united in fighting against foreign domination and interference and not fighting alongside U.S. forces,” the peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) said as it asserted that there can be no freedom and independence with the continued U.S.’ warmongering and trampling of our national sovereignty.
“Wherever there is U.S. involvement and presence of U.S. troops, there is war and destruction. We have seen this in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world where U.S. instigated proxy wars. This war against the Maute group was practically started by the U.S.,” said KMP secretary general Antonio Flores, referring to the Maute group’s alleged origins and linkage to ISIS and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
“The continuing Martial Law in Mindanao is also against the people’s freedom. There can be no freedom when civil and political rights are curtailed and when military rule is above civilian supremacy.”
The peasant leader said that in authorizing the military, particularly General Delfin Lorenzana to run state affairs under Martial Law, President Duterte has undermined the country’s sovereignty and independence.
“While Duterte is constantly mouthing strong words and empty threats, he practically acted like a lame duck when he admitted that he is not aware of the participation of U.S. troops in the military operations in Marawi.”
Government officials recently said that the U.S. military have been providing training and equipment to the Philippine Marines in their operations to flush out members of the Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorist groups in Mindanao.
“Duterte just accepted the fact and situation that U.S. forces are involved in the military’s fight against terrorists that have turned Marawi City into a battle zone, displacing thousands of Moro people.”
Lorenzana said in an interview that U.S. special forces sighted in Camp Ranao in Marawi City were coordinating communications link between the P3 Orion spy plane and AFP forces fighting the Maute group on the ground. “The presence and meddling of U.S. forces will only prolong and complicate this war.”
The heavy infighting in Marawi has displaced close to 200,000 people, majority are Moros.
In a rally at the United States Embassy in Manila on the commemoration of the 119th Philippine Independence Day, the peasant leader said Duterte should heed the people’s demand for the immediate lifting of Martial Law in Mindanao.
